Committees
1. PARET: Mark Yordy, not in attendance, sent report via email: Everyone is welcome to visit the Peninsula Amateur Radio Emergency Team Field Day operation on June 22-23 at the Key Peninsula Sports Park / Volunteer Park 2.4 miles south of Key Center on the Key Peninsula Highway. Field Day is an exercise in emergency field communications and an opportunity improve public awareness of amateur radio emergency services. This will be our second Field Day operation and we are excited about the event. We will again be battery powered and solar recharged for an environmentally friendly event. Please visit us and experience ham radio at it's best. And if a public official happens to sign our visitor log we get a 100 point bonus on our event score.
2. Webmaster: Sue Gillmore, no report
3. Training: Candy Anderson, not in attendance; JoAnne Gray reviewed past events and noted upcoming events: April 6th booth at Health and Safety Fair, May 11th booth at Key Peninsula non-profit Fair, May 16th Basic Preparedness Training meeting. Upcoming events include a number of seminar slots available through Peninsula Light Co and another event on the Key Peninsula August 23rd.
4. Water: Marsh Allen – led discussion on whether PEP-C should sell barrels at public events? For example, at the Health and Safety Fair this past April, we only sold 2 barrels. The public isn’t expecting to see us selling barrels other than at our regularly scheduled barrel sale location. Is it worth the time and energy to sell barrels at any other time? A motion was made not to sell barrels at these other public events. Motion was seconded and approved.
5. PIO: Hugh McMillan, not in attendance. No report
6. KGHP: Keith Stiles, not in attendance. No report
7. Peninsula School District: Dave Watson. No report
8. Fire Districts: Bob Black. Current focus county wide is on terrorism. County response teams, including law enforcement officers, fire district personnel and the military, are currently preparing for a large scale terrorism response drill/exercise on July 15th. Following that, attention will be focused locally.
OLD BUSINESS
1. Event Reports:
- Health & Safety Expo: JoAnne Gray. Booth location was excellent for our displays; expo was well attended; booth was well-manned by PEP-C members.
- Partners in Preparedness Seminar: Marv Nauman. Again, this year lots of good information was presented; instruction on electrical safety was excellent and valuable; terrorism focus is to expect more of what we have experienced (bombs, viruses and diseases); much was learned from the Sept. 11 incident in New York – after the twin towers fell, all that remained was paper and steel; all else turned to dust and those response teams working in the area were subject to breathing in that dust. Consequences may include illnesses and deaths; simple dust mask would significantly minimize health risks.
- KP Non-Profit Fair: Ramsdells. Fair not well attended.
- Parade: Committee discussion. Kudos to those who participated in the parade, including Gillmores for use of their SUV and boat – it made a big difference. Float looked great. Ran out of fliers – didn’t expect to hand out so many; should have just stowed the box in the boat just in case. Alternative to handing out candy discussed. So much candy was handed out at the parade, the kids were not picking it up. Dave Watson proposed we send out an email to committee members soliciting ideas for alternative handouts for next year’s parade. The shuttle that was advertised to shuttle parade participants back to their cars after the parade was apparently a “ghost” shuttle. It was proposed that PEP-C make own arrangements to shuttle our people back to the parking area.
2. New Brochures: They look great! A motion was made to approve funds up to $500 for printing additional brochures. Motion was seconded and approved.
3. Stickers: Still working on this.
4. Storm Watch Radios: decided to just stock and sell the more inexpensive radios
5. Larry Claiborne was given a thank-you dinner and letter of thanks from PEP-C.
NEW BUSINESS
1. Home Neighborhood Training Discussion: Mayor Wilbert proposed that public awareness and interest in home and family preparedness is very high. We should take advantage of this and get into neighborhoods. Various methods of generating meetings were discussed as well as the challenges involved. JoAnne Gray assigned to discuss opportunity with Candy Anderson and get the ball rolling. The committee feels we should be doing more, doing it better and doing it faster. JoAnne and Candy feel that more committee members need to get involved in this work.
2. Logo/Shirts: Discussion on whether or not we need something to identify us at events. Do we want to create a logo and stitch or silk screen it on shirts? Do we just want all to wear a red shirt and PEP-C name badge? Motion was made to adopt policy of wearing a red shirt and a PEP-C name badge. Motion was seconded and approved.
3. Elections: Joseph Jones is the only Board Member whose term is complete. Joseph Jones was nominated to serve another term. Nomination was seconded and approved.
